He is the current Minister of Foreign Affairs of Djibouti. He will succeed Chadian Moussa Faki Mahamat who served two 4-year terms at the head of the organization which ends on March 15.
Reaction of the new President of the AU Commission following a very close vote:
« I am very moved. Just like the million Djiboutians, you cannot imagine the general euphoria that reigns in Djibouti as I speak to you. Our compatriots have acceded to the highest African authority. No Djiboutian has acceded to this responsibility which is an enormous responsibility on a continental scale. Firstly because there are 1.4 billion Africans. And then there are many projects for the years to come, to pacify Africa, to restore stability to Africa. Well, as you know, problems persist everywhere in Sudan, particularly in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo. So, it is the greatest pride for the Republic of Djibouti. And then Mahmoud will be the right man, where he is needed, to be able to carry out what the African heads of state have entrusted to him in the service of Africa and Africans. »
